This event will focus upon opportunities for collaboration and cooperation between the media, nonprofit organizations and the philanthropic community in a post-Katrina environment, and will highlight innovative programs involving print, radio, television, film and internet media that have benefited communities in the hurricane-affected areas by affecting policy change, building the capacity of nonprofit organizations, and creating awareness of the challenges faced by those struggling to rebuild their communities.

Confirmed Speakers:

  • Laura Belsey — producer of Katrina’s Children, a documentary film telling the story of Hurricane Katrina through the eyes of New Orleans’ children
  • Lolis Elie — author, Times-Picayune journalist and documentary filmmaker who has written extensively about the effects of Hurricane Katrina and has been a vocal advocate for the people of New Orleans
  • James Hillman — Jungian psychologist, author of the best selling The Soul’s Code, and documentary film-maker
  • Jack Rosenthal — President, The New York Times Company Foundation, and past assistant managing editor of The New York Times
  • James Rucker — co-founder of ColorOfChange.org, an organization developed in the wake of Katrina to strengthen Black America's political voice
  • Harry Shearer — actor, author, director, satirist, musician, radio host, playwright, multi-media artist and record label owner, who has blogged extensively about Hurricane Katrina on huffingtonpost.com
  • Makani Themba-Nixon — author, Executive Director of The Praxis Project, and founder of Katrina Information Network, a collaboration of groups in the Gulf and across the country working to build power for change
